Let's hope that your information is excellent. So excellent that the visitor immediately wants to buy a unit and clicks a link to one of the brands. The same link which has been obtained by you from the merchant site and has been placed strategically on your website/blog.

When a customer clicks your link and buys a product you get a commission. The commission rate varies from merchant to merchant. Digital products grab you more percentage than the physical products.

This one is a review of one of the resorts in some great country. When a visitor comes to my blog and visits the above page he reads the review. In case he gets super excited and wants to check the rooms or book a room right away he clicks the link that says "click here to book your stay now". Whenever a person clicks through that link I get a small commission. If that person books the room I will make any where up to 5-6% of the booking fees. And this is how affiliate marketing works.

It might take anywhere from six months to a year or two to start getting success

You need to put a lot of hard work

It is not absolutely free, you need to invest money (usually less than 150$ for a basic setup) and time.

How does the merchant know that the visitor came through your link?

This is mostly done with cookie tracking.

The code given to you from the merchant allows them to track your links and activities through special bits of software which plants small pieces of text files on the visitors browsers called cookies. These cookies will be active for a certain amount of time. Some will be active for 60 while others for 90 days. What it means is that in case a visitor clicks on your link but does not buy anything but returns after 7 days to buy the same product you won't lose your commission. The cookie is still active and it will tell the merchant that the visitor was referred by you and you are the one who introduced him to the product.

How much money can you earn with affiliate commissions?

Sky is the limit. People are earning six to seven figures income. But let's be realistic. It is not a get rich quick scheme. You need to put your hard work before you start seeing results. Of course you will not start earning six figure incomes in the beginning itself. Most people start from 500-1000 dollars per month and gradually increase their income. Once they become experts they start generating large revenues and start thinking of quitting their 9 to 5 jobs!
